Every nation needs to offer something to it’s citizens. While this is a work in progress, we are working on building a solid Bill of Rights that will stand the test of time. We don’t want something like the United States’ Bill of Rights, because that would allow the government to eventually infringe on the citizenry; no, what we want is a Bill of Rights that the government must not interfere with or interpret.
    1. The Right of Freedom of Speech. Citizens may say whatever they want, whenever they want, however they want, just so long as they don’t infringe on the rights of others. They must be willing to take the consequences for what they say, i.e. not being hired by an employer because he/she was offended/angry at something you said. Also, citizens may be liable for libel if they say something untrue about someone.
    2. The right to freedom of religion. This includes the right to not have religion or beliefs imposed on a person by the government. People may try to convince others to follow certain trains of thought, but nobody may force any religion on anyone.
    3. The right to property. Citizens have the right to own property in Pentortoise territory. They must not infringe on anybody else’s right to property by stealing.
    4. The right to bear arms. For a safe society, the citizens must be able to bear arms to defend themselves. Certain government buildings may be exempt from this right, but other than that, all citizens will be able to bear arms in the Kingdom of Pentortoise. non-citizens like tourists and other visitors do not share this right. Areas of high concentrations of people (like ports, stadiums, etc.) will require those bearing weapons to prove their citizenship status to keep their weapons with them.
As stated above, this is a work in progress. There are many more basic rights and freedoms that everyone ought to have, which we will put in here as soon as we have a good way of phrasing them. Keep checking here for updates on the future rights and freedoms citipens of the Kingdom of Pentortoise receive.
